When people think of child sacrifice, they often imagine it as a horrific thing of the past. But the barbaric ritual is still widely practiced today. And some who engage in it mistakenly believe that it is constitutionally protected.

On Wednesday, February 1, the Satanic Temple announced that it will be opening an online abortion clinic to distribute “religious medication abortion care” to women in New Mexico via the mail. It has promised to provide free “medical and religious services” to patients who desire to perform the “Religious Abortion Ritual.” However, this religious rite comes with a price tag. Women will still be required to pay for the abortion drugs.

This demonic initiative is a thinly veiled attempt to challenge state abortion bans. The Satanic Temple is attempting to frame abortion as a religious exercise protected by the First Amendment. But abortion is not included in the U.S. Constitution’s right to religious freedom, even when done as a religious ritual.
The courts have ruled that not all religious exercises are protected by the First Amendment. There are some moral principles which all people must adhere to regardless of their beliefs.
For example, a Hindu in the United States could not forcibly burn a widow to death on her husband’s funeral pyre (sati) and appeal to his First Amendment right to do so. This is because the widow is human. Intentionally killing innocent human beings does not constitute as a protected religious exercise under the constitution.
But that is exactly what abortion does. The science of embryology teaches that preborn babies are distinct, living, and whole human beings from the moment of fertilization.
Abortion intentionally kills innocent babies by starving, suffocating, and ripping them apart limb from limb. And most Americans do not understand this. If we wish to change society’s mindset on abortion, the pro-life movement needs to demonstrate that abortion violently kills a baby.
As humans, preborn children deserve equal protection under the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. So, just as killing toddlers in a religious rite would never be permitted by law, neither should the courts allow satanists to kill preborn babies under the guise of religious freedom.
There are many religious activities which should be protected by law, but child sacrifice is not one of them. The preborn are human, and abortion is not a religious right.
